As of June 24, 2025, foreigners married to Vietnamese citizens can gain Vietnamese citizenship without necessarily meeting previous residency, language, or financial requirements.
Recent amendments to the Law on Vietnamese Nationality, approved by the National Assembly, have relaxed these conditions. This change applies to foreign nationals and stateless persons who have a Vietnamese spouse, child, parent, or grandparent.
While previous requirements often included proving Vietnamese language proficiency, demonstrating financial self-sufficiency, or having lived in Vietnam for at least five years, these are now waived for eligible applicants with family ties.
However, applicants must still comply with Vietnamese laws, respect local culture and customs, and demonstrate full legal capacity (though this is waived for children applying with a Vietnamese parent).
Furthermore, the updated law also allows for dual citizenship in some cases, particularly if the applicant has Vietnamese relatives and receives presidential approval. Those living abroad can submit their applications through Vietnamese embassies or consulates.
